Word of the Day: How to use 'Punya'

Punya can be used in the following ways:

Possesive Pronoun Marker: 's

By default, placing pronouns (or Proper Nouns) after another noun will directly denote the pronoun as the possesor of the noun preceding it. Alternatively, punya can be used after a pronoun (or Proper Nouns) to mark the noun following it as the posession of the pronoun. Punya can also be used more than once in a noun phrase. When the noun is implied, the noun can also be omitted.

Examples:

1. Ini saya punya rumah.

 This is my house.

2. Abang saya punya kawan orang Siam. // Saya punya abang punya kawan orang Siam.

 My brother's friend is Thai.

3. Jangan pegang orang lain punya.

 Don't touch other people's (things).

4. Siapa punya kasut tak susun elok-elok ini?

 Whose shoes which weren't arranged neatly are these ?


Intensifier: so, really

Punya can also precede adjective to intensify it almost the same manner as how begitu does. It is also more colloquial. -lah can be attached after punya to further intensify it and adding some level of inflection (like annoyance).

Examples:

1. Orang itu punya pelik.

 That person is so weird.

2. Punya besar rumah kau ni, Adam.

 Your house is so masssive, Adam.

3. Punyalah lama aku tunggu di sini, dia tak sampai-sampai.

 I've been waiting for so long here but he still hasn't arrived. 

4. Punyalah tak tersangka tahun ini aku berjaya macam ini.

 I really wouldn't have expected that this year I'm this successful.


Assertion Particle: trust me, I'm telling you

When placed at the end of the sentence, punya is used to express the speaker's confidence about a certain statement he has made. It is commonly used with conjectural auxiliary verbs (like pasti, mesti, and others).

Examples:

1. Perempuan itu cantik punya.

 That girl is beautiful (I'm telling you).

2. Belilah yang mahal punya. Takkan rosak punya.

 Buy the expensive one. It won't break down (trust me).

3. Kalau balik lambat, ibu mesti akan marah punya.

 If we go back home late, mother will definitely get angry.

4. Kan aku dah kata, kau akan menyesal punya.

 I told you so, you would definitely regret it.
