Word of the Day: How to use 'Terus'

Terus can be used in the following ways:

(Transitive) Verb: to continue, to proceed

Terus is used to describe engaging an action along it's course. It's usually used to express continuing a process to the next step. As a primary verb, (meN)teruskan--> meneruskan is followed by a direct object which is something that is continued after a pause or momentarily stop.

Examples:

 1. Saya akan teruskan pelajaran tak lama lagi.

 I'll be continuing my study soon.

 2. Pelajar digalakkan untuk meneruskan prestasi yang cemerlang.

 Students are encouraged to continue their excellent performance.

 3. Teruskan langkah walaupun menghadapi kesukaran.

 Continue to step (ahead) even when experiencing hardships.

 4. Kerajaan meneruskan pembangunan keretapi laju setelah tergendala.

 The government will continue the development of high speed train after it has been interrupted.


(Aspect Auxiliary) Verb: straight, immediately (after), continue to

Terus can precede the primary verb to express that the verb is done immediately usually after doing something else. When used with stative verbs (ber- verbs), it means the state continues and remain unchanged.

Examples:

1. Saya akan terus berada di sini.

I'll continue to be here.

2. Walaupun hidup susah, dia terus bersama dengan suaminya.

Although life is hard, she remains (continue to be) together with her husband.

3. Selepas sampai, dia terus makan sebab lapar.

After he arrrived, he immidiately ate because he was hungry.

4. Bila mak sampai, kami pun terus tutup TV dan sambung buat kerja rumah.

When mom arrived, we immediately switched off the TV and continue doing our homework.

5. Selepas makan, jangan terus tidur nanti senang gemuk.

Do not immediately sleep after eating for fear of easily getting fat.


Adverb: straight (on), raw

Be careful as terus may come after verbs too. Using terus this way hints the idea that the action can be done without having to do anything additional.

Examples:

1. Jalan terus.

Walk (/drive) straight ahead.

2. Buah ini boleh makan terus.

This fruit can be eaten raw.

3. Kalau ada apa-apa masalah, cakap terus.

If you have any problems, say it straight.

4. Walaupun tak lama berkenalan, mereka kahwin terus.

Although they don't know each other long, they married straight away.

Word of the Day: How to use 'Lagi'

Lagi  can be used in the following ways: Adverb:  again, more, else Lagi  converys the idea of more. It usually comes directly after classifiers indicating the amount of objects. When referred to verbs, it means the verb continues or is repeated in the near future. Examples :  1. Tolong ulang sekali lagi.      Please repeat (again).  2. Kita perlukan 10 batang lagi.      We need 10 more.  3. Makanlah (banyak) lagi kalau masih lapar.   Eat more if you're still hungry.  4.
